The G-5s shelled Cuito Cuanavale and targets of opportunity elsewhere, including a convoy of one hundred vehicles moving from Tumpo to Cuito Cuanavle. At the town itself, a G-5 shell scored a direct hit on a Bar Lock radar. A BM-21 that attempted a counter-bombardment was destroyed.

12 Nov 1987 Cunzumbia River
12 November during Operation Moduler had the SADF and UNITA soldiers resting and replenishing, with the South Africans now becoming short of mechanical spares and consumables. The SADF logistics network was hindered by the distance between South Africa and the battle sites, the inability to stockpile close to the battles due to the SADF units perpetual movement and insufficient logistics vehicles to move the supplies. MiG bombing attacks continued on the units throughout the day but were not successful and the SADF artillery continued to target the Mianei and Chambinga crossings but they to were subject wear and tear of continuous fire and so slowing fire.
11 Nov 1987
11 November - Operation Moduler. The plan called for three attacks. Combat Group Bravo would keep 21 and 59 Brigades engaged while Combat Group Alpha would engage 16 Brigade positions from the north-east, drawing the tanks away in a diversionary move. It would then become the SADF reserve and Charlie would lead the main attack from the south.
The attack began at 06h00 with SADF artillery attacking the northern units of 16 Brigade giving them the impression that it was the target and this impression was followed up by SAAF Mirage bombing on the same positions at 07h00. Charlie's attack resumed around 10h00 as it had again been held up by poor navigation through thick bush and MiG bombing runs taking one wounded and this allowed FAPLA to withdraw some of its units in the south. They soon come up against two battalions, ten tanks and artillery.
After resting Charlie regained the momentum around 12h25 when six Mirages bomb 16 Brigade positions but are then counter-attacked by the ...
10 Nov 1987 Cunzumbia River
10 November saw Combat Group Charlie (Operation Moduler) resting in a position 15 km east of the Cunzumbia River. At round 15h00, Combat Group Charlie resumed its attack on 16 Brigade but at last light was unsuccessful after being slowed by MiG bombing attacks, observation of their attack by FAPLA reconnaissance and a shooting incident within the unit.
The SADF Tactical HQ now moved to Catato Bush on the night of 10/11 November and would be subject to a Mig-23 bombing attack during the day. The same evening 59 Brigade had begun its withdrawal from its position between the Humbe and Vimpulo rivers across the Chambinga crossing while 16 Brigade was reinforced with tanks
9 Nov 1987 Cunzumbia River
Operation Modular Phase 2. The attack began at 01h00 with Combat Group Alpha moving to position themselves to the south of 16 Brigade, while Combat Group Charlie started to move to its positions north at 04h00. SADF mortar and artillery began to shell the enemy while a 06h30 bombing by SAAF Mirages kept the pressure on FAPLA. The main attack unit, Combat Group Charlie, was 4 km northeast from 16 Brigade around 06h00.
At 07h00 Combat Group Alpha began its diversionary attack on 16 Brigade from the south, with the brigade responding by preparing their tanks to attack the group. Combat Group Alpha withdrew and became the task force reserve. Combat Group Charlie's attack was led by a company from 32 Bn with UNITA troops and became pinned down by machine gun and 23 mm anti-aircraft guns, followed too far behind by 4SAI and UNITA troops who were moving too slowly due to dense bush and trees. Meanwhile, FAPLA prepared an ambush for 4SAI's left flank consisting of 3 tanks, various AA gun...
8 Nov 1987 Viposto
During 8 November SADF artillery shelled every possible target and reported movement. A small convoy left Viposto apparently making for the Vimpulo, but it was immediately shelled and several vehicles were set on fire, bringing it to a stop. This was probably the element that had delivered the TMM bridge to the Operational Command Post. (Operation Moduler Second phase).
59 Brigade was attacked by 3 x Mirage F1AZs at 11h00, drawing some ineffective 23 mm fire. An air attack on 21 Brigade planned for 15h35 was cancelled because of the proximity of friendly forces.

24 Oct 1987 Cuito Cuanavale
In a very sophisticated operation, 4 SAAF Mirage F-1AZ fighter aircraft launch a dummy attack on the airfield at Cuito Cuanavale. Knowing they are no match for the MIG-23 fighters, their task is to bluff them that they were about to attack. As they overfly the base, they break off their attack and drop below radar level and return to base. As they do this, SADF SF launch balloons designed to confuse radar and convince the MIG-23’s to scramble.
As they taxi onto the runway out of their reinforced hangars, they are mercilessly pounded by accurate G5 artillery barrages, destroying one and damaging the rest. This effectively factors the MIG-23’s out of the combat equation in the short-term. The G5 barrage continues sporadically until 28/10/87, under the forward control of SADF SF in an OP over the airfield, by which time it is totally destroyed.
14 Oct 1987 Cuito Cuanavale
The SADF G5 artillery bombardment of Cuito Cuanavale begins. This lasts for weeks wearing down FAPLA’s will to fight.
FAPLA 59 Brigade is ordered to locate and destroy these artillery batteries. Task Force Delta shadows 59 Brigade, but is unable to engage, because the terrain precludes the use of their anti-tank weapons. As a result of this dilemma, Battle Group Alpha, still in existence, is ordered to attack 59 Brigade, giving Task Force Delta the opportunity to move to the high ground at Vimposto, tasked with the responsibility of preventing reinforcements from FAPLA 16 or 66 Brigade from coming in to support 59 Brigade.

10 Oct 1987 Cunzumbia-Mianei
The remnants of FAPLA 47 Brigade, along with 16, 21 Brigades and Tactical Group 2, retreat to the source of the Cunzumbia River.
This triggers planning in the SADF to destroy FAPLA east of the Cuito River by no later than 15/12/87. This results in the formation of Task Force Delta, under the command of Major L.L. du Plessis, consisting of the following elements of 32 Battalion: Foxtrot Company travelling in Buffel MPV’s, two 106-mm recoilless gun vehicles, two Unimog supply vehicles, four 81-mm mortars mounted on Unimogs, two Milan vehicles and UNITA’s 3rd Regular Battalion. Late in the afternoon these orders are changed and 21 Brigade is instructed to withdraw to the north-east in response to the aggressive harassment from the SADF.

This is followed at 21:00 by a barrage of 80 G5 shells, this time aimed at 21 Brigade, halting its advance. Simultaneously, the 32 Battalion anti-tank squadron and 120-mm heavy mortar battery, moves to Commandant Hartslief’s position 5-km south-east of the Lomba-Cuzizi confluence
