Description

Discussion group for 1 Squadron RRAF. 1 Squadron RRAF was a unit of the Southern Rhodesia Air Force (SRAF), formed in 1939 and later absorbed into the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1940, becoming 237 (Rhodesia) Squadron RAF. In the post-WWII period, a new 1 Squadron RRAF was formed within the Rhodesian Air Force (RhAF), equipped with Hawker Hunters. This later incarnation was known as the “Fighting First” and served during the Rhodesian Bush War. Formation and World War II: The original 1 Squadron, SRAF, was established in 1939 but was integrated into the RAF in 1940, where it became 237 (Rhodesia) Squadron. This squadron served in East Africa during 1940-1941. Post-War and Bush War: After the war, a new 1 Squadron RRAF was established within the reformed Rhodesian Air Force. It was equipped with Hawker Hunter fighter jets. Nickname and Standard: The squadron was nicknamed the “Fighting First”. On September 21, 1973, it was presented with a Standard (colours) by Air Marshal A. O. G. Wilson, which depicted the battle honours of the former 237 (Rhodesia) Squadron RAF
